Ubuntu 15.04 Beta 2 Review: Getting ready
2:16 PMAfter a successful 14.04 LTS release and not so promising 14.10, as stated by many users, 15.04 takes a place, or better to say it is going to take a place on 23th of April which is a final release date. It is codenamed Vivid Vervet. Let's take a look under a hood what it brings.
It is packed with a brand new kernel 3.19 and brings Xorg server version 1.17. Also there are some improvements for AMD Graphic Card users following these updates.
After installation is finished we get this
If you ask me it is a really weird wallpaper. It looks like one we have seen in 14.04, just different color. If it bothers you, there are as always new wallpapers so you can pick up some of default wallpapers, or choose one of your own.
You may be hearing of upcoming Unity 8, but bad news: it is still under a heavy development. You can try a daily build named Ubuntu Next. It will eventually come up as an alternative desktop on Ubuntu 15.10, but stable Unity 8 is expected on 16.04, which will be also next LTS release. Also it is for now intended only for touchscreens so you will find it barely usable with keyboard and mouse. Get back on Ubuntu 15.04. Desktop is still the same, but there are some other improvements. Thanks to new kernel and Xorg version now my Bluetooth and function keys are now finally changing screen brightness. Yay!
Usage remains quiet, as on 14.04:
Multimedia is always working good if you install required plugins, which are an installation option. Also what's new is Videos application (Totem). It is updated to v2.0. All Gnome application are now raised to 3.14 version.
Ubuntu 15.04 has a default behavior to show menu in window title, but if you're not ok with that you can change it anytime.
On this release, even it's beta, I didn't have any serious issues. Bluetooth is finally working, brightness, and also laptop wakes now every time from sleep. In previous versions it will end up on black screen.
Final words
Ubuntu runs fine on my laptop, even it is still Beta. It is not too early nor it's the time to say the real conclusion about Ubuntu 15.04, but till now I had only few crashes that weren't serious. For me it is already fine release, but we'll see on 23th April. Greetings.
