Fedora Rawhide Review: Partybreaker

1:26 PM

These days I am in process of searching for new distribution and I have decided to choose one that has the latest software and everything. So, yes it must be a rolling distribution. Then a Fedora Rawhide came as an interesting option. It says on wiki "for developers, students, enthusiasts" etc. Ok, I am in. Let's see what Fedora can offer.

Live session

We're here. Live session looks really pretty. Blue colors look very geeky and serious. Me already likes.

Under a hood it is powered with latest additions such as Linux 4.1 kernel and Xorg server 1.17. Also Gnome is always the latest on Fedora and it is 3.16. Everything is built from latest sources.

Great, now, let's fire the installer.

Installer looks really nice. It is still experimental, so we get this warning.
Ok, proceed at my own risk. I accept my fate.

Now we're setting up basic things such as keyboard layout and installation destination.

After we set up everything, we're ready to install. Clicking to proceed.
And then suddenly, installation crashes.

It says it failed at the point when it was calling up the disk partitioner. I tried few times, but got no luck. Maybe future still has to come.
Just then, my journey into future was over. It seems the time has come to choose over something else. Fedora Rawhide is no go. Really embarrassing.

Aftermath

Fedora Rawhide was an interesting option. As said above, it is built entirely using latest sources, and also you will find there date when it is built and status (if it was successful or not, if it failed no ISO for you).
It is very similar to Debian Sid, which is also an unstable distribution. So, yes, you should be prepared for crash to happen on every corner. Everything is purely experimental, and one package can break whole system. But if you like to live on edge like me, it will be a fun journey. This makes Fedora Rawhide a perfect partybreaker. It was expected to have broken system, but at least it should happen after installation.
We're finished here.
Greetings.
