Here's my current desktop. Dwm is my favourite wm, because of its ease of configuration and lightweight code. It could run on legacy machines also.
Today's recipe:
conky+dzen2
ohsnap fonts
statuscolors patch

Of course, to get those cool icons you can just use bdf font, but if you are a total newcomer to wms, then you should take a ride at dwm site
You will have to get some basics before starting to create your perfect setup.
